Spotify has crossed the 300 million subscriber milestone for the first time, the company announced on Tuesday. The streaming platform also reported 777 million monthly active users in the second quarter, a 12% increase year-over-year.
Despite raising subscription prices in several regions this year, Spotify's subscriber base grew by 9% in the quarter. The company has been diversifying its offerings, introducing fitness content, narrated magazine articles, concert ticket sales, and even physical book purchases.
The company reported quarterly revenue of €4.8 billion ($5.52 billion), up 14% from the same period last year.
Spotify has significantly ramped up its AI investments in recent months. The platform has launched tools for creating personalized podcasts from various sources and debuted a NotebookLM-like desktop app in May. AI-powered Q&A and briefing features have been added to podcasts, alongside an Audiobook creation tool developed in partnership with ElevenLabs. The company has also signed a deal with music labels to permit fan-generated remixes and, last month, introduced a conversational AI assistant that allows users to steer content using natural language prompts.
Despite these innovations, Spotify faces growing criticism over its hosting of AI-generated music. To address these concerns, the platform has introduced a verification system for artists and, last year, began offering optional labeling for AI-generated tracks.
As effective AI music detection systems remain elusive, some users are turning to third-party solutions like SoullessMusic.com and SlopTracker, as reported by 404 Media last month. This ongoing tension highlights the challenges Spotify faces in balancing technological advancement with user trust and content authenticity.
