Spotify Will Not Recommend Music from 'AI Personas'
Spotify has announced that it will no longer recommend music from artist profiles that do not represent a real person. These profiles, which will now carry an 'AI Persona' badge, are created by or for AI-generated artists. The move, which is effective from 2026, aims to clarify the distinction between human and AI-created music on the platform and to address growing concerns about the authenticity of music recommendations.
In a blog post, Spotify explained that the 'AI Persona' badge will be applied to profiles that are 'not representing a real person.' This includes profiles that are AI-generated or those that use AI to create music under a fictional name. The badge is designed to inform listeners that the music they are hearing is not produced by a human artist, thereby helping users make more informed listening choices.
The decision comes as part of Spotify's broader effort to update its policies around AI-generated content. The company has been under pressure from artists and listeners alike to be more transparent about the use of AI in music creation. By tagging AI Personas, Spotify hopes to maintain trust with its user base while still allowing AI-generated music to exist on the platform.
However, the policy does not mean that AI-generated music will be completely banned. Instead, it will be clearly labeled, and such tracks will not be pushed through Spotify's recommendation algorithms. This means that while listeners can still find and play AI Persona music, it won't appear in curated playlists or personalized recommendations.
Industry experts have mixed feelings about this move. Some argue that it is a necessary step to protect the integrity of human artistry, while others believe it could stigmatize AI-generated music, which can be a creative tool for many artists. Spotify, for its part, has stated that it values all forms of creative expression but believes that transparency is key to fostering a healthy music ecosystem.
As AI technology continues to evolve, platforms like Spotify will likely face more questions about how to handle AI-generated content. This policy is just one example of how the industry is adapting to the rise of AI in creative fields.
