Superhuman Acquires AI Detection Startup GPTZero

GPTZero, the three-year-old AI detection startup founded by Princeton graduate Edward Tian as his senior thesis project, has been acquired by Superhuman, the companies announced on Tuesday.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, Tian told Business Insider that GPTZero had grown to over 19 million registered users and generated $30 million in annual recurring revenue by the time of the acquisition.

Back in 2024, Tian informed TechCrunch that the startup was already profitable. Tian and co-founder and CTO Alex Cui, friends since high school, raised a $3.5 million seed round led by Uncork Capital. This was followed by a $10 million Series A in June 2024, led by Footwork co-founder Nikhil Basu Trivedi, with participation from Reach Capital, Jack Altman's Alt Capital, and Neo. In total, the company raised only $13.5 million.

Superhuman, the company formed after Grammarly acquired the email provider Superhuman in 2025 and rebranded under that name, already had an AI detection tool built into its platform. GPTZero's mission has been to help users detect and defend against AI-generated content, often referred to as "AI slop." Grammarly's tool, on the other hand, has been designed to help users—especially students—determine if their writing appears AI-generated and then revise it to sound more natural.

Explaining the rationale behind acquiring a competitor, Superhuman stated, "Two AI detectors are better than one." The combined capabilities are expected to strengthen Superhuman's AI authenticity suite as the demand for transparent and trustworthy AI tools continues to grow in 2026 and beyond.
