AI notetaking hardware has rapidly gained traction over the past few years, with credit-card-sized devices, pendants, pins, and even transcribing earbuds all promising to capture meetings and transform them into summaries and actionable items. Now, a new wave of wearables—especially rings—is betting that people want to capture fleeting thoughts and spontaneous ideas in the same seamless way.
One startup leading this charge is Sandbar, the company behind the Stream voice ring. Designed for privacy and simplicity, Stream allows users to record voice notes and control music with a discreet, wearable form factor. To date, Sandbar has raised $36 million, including a $23 million Series A led by Adjacent and Kindred Ventures.
On a recent episode of TechCrunch's Equity podcast, host Rebecca Bellan spoke with Sandbar co-founder and CEO Mina Fahmi about why earlier voice hardware devices struggled to gain mainstream adoption—and why he believes keeping the user firmly in control is the key to making wearable tech truly useful.
Fahmi argues that many previous voice devices failed because they tried to replace the smartphone or demanded constant attention. In contrast, Stream is designed to complement daily life, offering a discreet and private way to capture ideas without pulling out a phone. He emphasizes that user agency is paramount: the device should assist, not intrude, and users must always feel in control of their data and interactions.
Looking ahead to 2026, the market for AI wearables is poised for significant growth, with rings emerging as a particularly promising category due to their form factor and ease of use. Sandbar's focus on voice as the primary interface could set a new standard for how we interact with technology on the go.
