From Workflow Resilience to Agentic Backbone
When Stephan Ewan co-founded Restate in 2022 to build durable workflow infrastructure, he couldn't have predicted how perfectly the offering would align with the needs of AI agent orchestration. The Berlin-based startup originally set out to create an execution engine that made multi-step workflows resilient to crashes and network interruptions—a capability that has since become foundational for the agentic era.
"It never was built for agents in the beginning, but it just happened to be a perfect match for all these problems that agents surface," Ewan told TechCrunch.
Durability is especially critical for agent workflows, which run longer and follow inherently unpredictable paths compared to traditional software. "You need to make sure you track exactly what you do to make it reproducible and have a consistent outcome," Ewan said.
Momentum and Funding
The explosion of AI agents has provided a powerful tailwind for the startup. Over the past few months, Restate has closed multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts, according to Ewan. That momentum has culminated in a $20 million Series A round led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures.
The fresh capital will help Restate challenge Temporal, the heavyweight in the durable infrastructure space. Temporal, founded in 2019, announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier this month. Despite being a much smaller provider, Restate has already attracted high-profile customers, including vibe coding platform Replit.
Architecture and Differentiation
Rather than building its durable execution engine on top of an external database, Restate developed its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers. This architecture allows the platform to be exceptionally fast and lightweight, Ewan said. While many companies tend to use durability engines for so-called heavyweight workflows, Restate aims to change that with a more efficient and cost-effective system.
Ewan noted that in addition to serving AI companies, Restate is working with Fortune 500 customers, including in the financial sector. While use cases vary, customers share a common need: a way to ensure that if something fails mid-process, the system automatically finds a way to put itself back together.
Founding Team and Roadmap
Prior to launching Restate, Ewan co-created the popular open-source stream-processing framework Apache Flink and later served as CTO of Data Artisans, a company commercializing the project. Alibaba acquired Data Artisans in 2019 and rebranded it as Ververica, where Ewan continued as CTO for three years. Restate's other two co-founders, Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, are former colleagues from Data Artisans and Ververica.
The company plans to use its new funding to hire a go-to-market team, bring on more engineers, and expand its San Francisco Bay Area office to be closer to current and potential customers.
Looking ahead, Ewan insists that Restate's capabilities will soon be essential to companies outside of traditional tech. "If we fast-forward a couple of years, it's one of those tools, like a database, that I think pretty much any company will have a use case for, no matter their shape and size," he said.
