a16z Launches $1.1B ‘Machine Age’ Fund to Accelerate AI’s Physical Infrastructure
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has unveiled a new $1.1 billion fund, dubbed the “Machine Age” fund, aimed at accelerating the physical buildout of artificial intelligence. The venture capital firm’s latest initiative marks a notable shift from its traditional focus on software scalability, instead targeting the hardware and infrastructure that underpin AI systems.
The fund will channel investments into a broad range of physical technologies critical to AI’s growth, including computer chips, memory, data centers, and robotics. In a blog post, a16z outlined the pressing need for faster, more efficient systems, affordable high-bandwidth memory across the memory hierarchy, and scalable interconnects between nodes and systems. The firm also highlighted the demand for power-efficient edge devices that enable AI to interact with the world, along with the supporting cooling, materials, electrical, and real estate infrastructure.
“We need faster, more efficient systems. We need cheaper and higher-bandwidth memory across the memory hierarchy. We need faster and more scalable interconnects between nodes and systems. We need power efficient edge devices for AI to explore and interact with the world. And of course we need all the cooling, materials, electrical, and real estate build out to support them,” the post reads.
Positioning AI as “the strongest tool ever developed for solving problems and bestowing abundance,” a16z described its advancement as a “social and national imperative.” The launch comes at a time when AI’s computational demands are soaring, with industry analysts predicting that global data center power consumption could double by 2026, driven by AI workloads. This fund positions a16z to capitalize on the growing need for specialized hardware and infrastructure, potentially reshaping the venture firm’s portfolio strategy.
As AI models grow more complex, the physical layer—from chip fabrication to cooling systems—has become a bottleneck. By dedicating significant capital to this space, a16z aims to unlock the next wave of AI innovation, ensuring that the digital and physical realms evolve in tandem.
