Gemini Spark, Google’s Agentic Assistant, Now Available on Mac

Gemini Spark, Google’s AI agent designed to assist with various aspects of your digital life, is now available on Mac. The launch marks a significant step in Google’s effort to bring agentic AI to the desktop, allowing the assistant to interact directly with files and applications on the user’s computer.

New Features and Integrations

On Wednesday, Google announced that Spark is being added to the existing Gemini desktop app, along with several updates and new features. These include the ability to stay updated on topics in real time and connect to more apps, such as Google Tasks and Google Keep.

The integration with Keep addresses a key complaint from early testers. When Spark launched last month, we specifically noted the lack of Keep integration as a major frustration. Short lists and notes belong in a lightweight app like Keep, not in a full document editor like Google Docs, which felt like overkill for something as simple as a packing list.

Competing in the Desktop AI Arena

The macOS launch positions Gemini Spark to compete more effectively with other desktop AI agents, such as Claude Desktop, Microsoft’s Copilot, and OpenClaw. By working with local files, and soon handling remote tasks, Spark offers a compelling alternative in the rapidly expanding AI assistant market.

Though not available at launch, Google says users will “soon” be able to assign multi-step tasks to Spark from their phones. For example, you could ask your phone to instruct your desktop agent to pull information from a file stored on your Mac.

Practical Use Cases

In the meantime, Spark can help you sort and organize files or use local documents as the source for a new Google Workspace doc or spreadsheet. Google suggests you could turn invoices on your computer into a budgeting worksheet with just a few prompts.

Availability

Gemini Spark for macOS (beta) is currently available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.
