The global race to tap underground hydrogen reserves is accelerating, as nations and companies seek new sources of clean fuel. But researchers are still working to pin down exactly how much of this resource exists beneath our feet.
Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is primarily found on Earth bound to other elements like oxygen (in water) or carbon (in hydrocarbons). However, natural or 'geologic' hydrogen—produced by subsurface chemical reactions—can accumulate in underground reservoirs, offering a potentially transformative energy source. Unlike traditional hydrogen production, which often relies on fossil fuels or energy-intensive electrolysis, natural hydrogen could be extracted directly, with minimal carbon footprint.
The promise is enormous: a global supply of clean fuel that could power industry, transport, and heating, without emitting greenhouse gases. Already, in Oman, hydrogen bubbles can be seen seeping through spring waters—a visible sign of the hidden bounty below. Researchers have identified several types of geological settings that could host significant hydrogen deposits, including ancient rift zones, iron-rich rock formations, and areas with high geothermal activity.
According to a 2026 report from the US Department of Energy, early estimates suggest that even a fraction of the world's natural hydrogen could meet global energy demand for decades. Yet, challenges remain. We still lack precise mapping techniques to locate these reserves, and drilling for hydrogen presents unique technical hurdles, such as managing the gas's tendency to leak and its explosive nature. Moreover, the economic viability of extraction is uncertain, with costs likely to remain high until production scales up.
Despite these hurdles, interest is surging. Startups and energy majors alike are investing in exploration across continents, from the US Midwest to Africa and Australia. Meanwhile, governments are drafting regulations to incentivize development. In the coming years, the key question will shift from 'How much hydrogen is out there?' to 'How quickly can we get to it sustainably?' As research advances, the underground hydrogen gold rush could reshape the global energy landscape—provided we can answer that question responsibly.
For now, the numbers remain fuzzy, but the direction is clear: as the world transitions away from fossil fuels, natural hydrogen may well prove to be a cornerstone of a clean energy future.
