Utilities race to partner with fusion startups, Realta Fusion the latest to benefit

Fusion startup Realta Fusion this week announced a deal with Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) that could lead to one of the first grid-connected fusion power plants in the United States, to be located in Wisconsin. The partnership underscores a broader trend: utilities worldwide are increasingly courting fusion startups—a dynamic that reflects both mounting anxiety over future power supply and genuine progress in fusion technology. For founders and investors tracking the sector, such tie-ups serve as a real-world credibility check. A utility deal offers fusion startups multiple advantages, including engineering support, permitting assistance, site selection for grid interconnection, and land leases. In return, utilities gain early access to a technology that could reshape the electricity grid for decades. These advances, combined with soaring electricity demand from AI data centers, have brought utilities to the table. Fusion power is a natural fit for many utilities grappling with the growth of wind and solar. Both are cheap and clean, but they generate power only when conditions allow. The plant will connect to the grid near Richmond, Virginia, and is expected to generate 400 megawatts. Both Google and Italian energy firm Eni have signed agreements to purchase electricity from the facility, which is slated to come online in the early 2030s. With electricity demand projected to surge further—driven by electrification, manufacturing, and AI infrastructure—the push for reliable, carbon-free baseload power has never been more urgent.
