The truth, which I believe we all intuitively grasp, is that there is no single driver of public opinion. Our perspectives emerge from a tangled mix of lived experience, conversations with friends and family, news consumption, social media, plus our upbringing, education, and values. We all construct our beliefs this way, and what we personally witness often leaves the deepest imprint. This explains why pundits fret over 'why American consumer sentiment is the worst it's ever been, even though macro metrics suggest no recession.' Our perceptions are not just a composite of data points. We see gas and grocery prices with our own eyes. We hear about stagnant wages or looming layoffs—for ourselves or those we love. We stitch these phenomena into a coherent narrative to make sense of—and cope with—our world. In this moment, Americans are struggling to understand and cope with a great deal.
