Friend AI Pendant 2026 Update: Now It Talks Back

Avi Schiffmann has unveiled a new version of his controversial AI companion. As of mid-2026, the upgraded pendant is more expensive—and users can no longer customize its personality.

First released in 2024 to mixed reviews, the Friend AI pendant originally functioned as a one-way listener, offering occasional prompts. In this 2026 iteration, the device has been redesigned for two-way conversation: it listens and talks back. The always-on, conversational AI uses real-time voice synthesis to respond to the wearer's statements and questions, aiming to mimic the flow of a human chat.

Perhaps the most significant change, however, is what was removed. Early models allowed users to tune the companion's personality, choosing between options like "supportive friend," "motivational coach," or "sassy sidekick." For 2026, Schiffmann has locked the AI into a single, pre-set character—described by the company as a "steady, empathetic companion." Schiffmann explained in a recent press briefing that early feedback showed users were unsettled by sudden personality shifts, and that a consistent voice builds trust.

At the same time, the price has jumped. The new Friend pendant retails for $249, up from $179. Sales began in July 2026, and the device is available through Friend's website.

Analysts remain skeptical. "The core question hasn't changed," says Dr. Elena Marchetti, a digital ethics researcher at MIT. "Does anyone actually want to wear a device that talks back all day? This feels like a solution to a problem few people have." Shipments are expected to reach early adopters by late August 2026.
