Elon Musk Caps Grok Bot Usage Limits Over 'Unsustainably High' Serving Costs

Users Report Sudden Usage Spikes Over Halloween Weekend

Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot users woke up to an unwelcome surprise: their weekly usage limits were unexpectedly maxed outβ€”even if they hadn't been running SpaceX's agentic AI overnight. Several users reported on X that their usage jumped from as low as 50% to 100% without explanation.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed in an X post on Sunday that the change was not a glitch.

"The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue," he wrote in reply to a user's question. Musk did not address the issue on his main feed, where he has continued to promote Grok Bot's ability to help users buy gifts for family members.

Grok Bot's Standout Performance Within SpaceX's AI Business

Grok Bot has been positioned as a success story for the newly public SpaceX. In a filing last month, the company said AI now accounts for 52% of company income. Its renamed "Super Intelligence" division posted a profit of $431 millionβ€”a rarity in the AI industry. That figure would have been higher were it not for $1.2 billion in one-time costs tied to SpaceX's acquisition of Cursor.

Musk recently described Grok Bot as having "the fastest growth of a product that I've ever seen in my life."

What's Next for Subscribers?

Musk has not yet specified how subscribers' usage limits will be affected moving forward, leaving questions about the long-term pricing and capacity strategy for the product unanswered.
