Andy Jassy Says Prime Video Is on Track to Earn 'Tens of Billions of Dollars'
Amazon's Streaming Arm Turns Profitable as MGM Bet Pays Off
Four years after Amazon acquired MGM for $8.5 billion, Hollywood has become a lucrative business for the e-commerce giant—helped along by the blockbuster success of this year's hit film Project Hail Mary.
Prime Video, Amazon's streaming service, "has emerged as a significant business with a revenue run rate in the tens of billions of dollars and is now profitable in its own right," Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said on the company's quarterly earnings call on Thursday. Jassy had previously told investors in May that Prime Video was profitable, but the disclosure that it is on track to generate tens of billions in revenue is a new detail.
Box Office Momentum
Amazon said its film studio, Amazon MGM Studios, has brought in more than $1.2 billion in global box office sales so far this year, driven by hits including Project Hail Mary and Verity. Project Hail Mary grossed an estimated $684 million worldwide, according to The Numbers. Starring Ryan Gosling and based on Andy Weir's novel, the film opened in theaters in March and became Amazon MGM Studios' highest-grossing release, according to entertainment reports. (The studio also had at least one notable flop this year: Melania.)
A Deep Television Slate
Jassy also cited a number of successful TV shows, including Carrie, The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Boys, Off Campus, Fallout, and Reacher. Season 4 of Reacher drew 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days, according to the company, with more to come: Season 5 is currently filming, and the show has already been picked up for a sixth season.
Sports as a Growth Engine
Sports programming has also been a significant driver. Prime Video broadcasts NASCAR, the Masters, and UEFA Champions League soccer, but Thursday Night Football appears to be its biggest success this year. The first six games of the season have averaged 17.7 million viewers, up 16% year over year, according to Nielsen figures Amazon shared. The streaming service also attracted more than 2 million viewers for its second season of NBA games on Prime, Nielsen said.
The Bigger Picture
The disclosure arrives at a pivotal moment for the streaming industry. As of 2026, major platforms are under mounting pressure to demonstrate sustainable profitability rather than subscriber growth alone, and advertising-supported tiers have become a central revenue driver across the sector. Prime Video's combination of a deep content library, live sports rights, and an ad-supported tier positions it alongside Netflix and Disney+ in the top tier of global streamers—while its integration with Amazon's broader retail and advertising ecosystem gives it a structural advantage competitors cannot easily replicate.
