Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Becomes SNL's Latest AI Punchline
Saturday Night Live turned its satire on the AI industry's recent warnings of doom this weekend, with cast member Jane Wickline offering her impression of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei during the show's "Weekend Update" segment.
Setting the Scene
Weekend Update host Michael Che โ who sounded a little uncertain about how to pronounce Amodei's last name โ kicked off the segment by describing the CEO as having "stumbled through a press tour" in which he seemingly agreed with a former employee's claim that artificial intelligence might destroy humanity.
Wickline's Impression
Wickline's version of Amodei sported an impressive wig and delivered halting answers that occasionally devolved into full-on Gollum-style exchanges with their dark side. At one point, the fictional Amodei confessed, "AI is the devil and I its maker."
Wickline-as-Amodei assured the audience that AI executives "are all on the same page here: We do not condone what we are doing."
"AI is not a weapon, it's a tool: A tool for building weapons," she declared. "And I urge you to urge me to stop."
Skewering the Industry's Optimism
As for the technology's supposed benefits, such as potentially curing cancer, the fictional Amodei struck a decidedly less hopeful tone: "Put it this way: In 10 years, there's about a 10% chance that cancer won't be a problem for anyone."
The sketch arrives amid an ongoing industry-wide conversation about AI safety, existential risk, and the gap between tech leaders' public optimism and private concerns โ a tension SNL was more than happy to exploit.
