YouTube is Making Comments More Fun — and Fandom More Lucrative

YouTube’s comments section is getting a major upgrade alongside a suite of new community-focused features, including exclusive paid memberships, the company announced at its Made on YouTube event on Wednesday. Commenters will soon be able to respond with GIFs or leave comments directly from their TVs, while creators gain new tools to support their fan communities—such as personalized moderation, VIP-like member areas, and fresh ways for fans to help them monetize content.

Comments remain one of the primary ways YouTube viewers interact with creators, but the platform has often lagged behind other social networks in commenting features. In 2026, the competition is heating up: TikTok recently announced that users can respond to videos with their voice and add polls, photo carousels, and Live Photos to comments. Spotify, meanwhile, lets video podcasters use polls and Q&As to engage audiences.

YouTube is finally catching up by adding support for GIFs in comments and letting users comment while watching YouTube on TV. The latter works via voice—no more painfully typing “LOL” on a remote control, as YouTube noted.

One of the more interesting additions is a new comment moderation tool that’s personalized to each creator’s needs. While YouTube already offers a comment moderation filter, creators may want to tailor it more precisely, especially on live videos where it’s harder to keep up. For now, the company is calling this personalized moderation an “experiment” and hasn’t provided specific technical details about how it works.

These updates reflect YouTube’s broader push in 2026 to strengthen creator-fan relationships and build a more lucrative ecosystem for fandom—where engagement directly translates into revenue and community loyalty.
