The Problem: EV Charger Installs Often Require Costly Panel Upgrades
Many people are eager to buy electric vehicles, but not everyone is ready to pay for an upgrade to their home's electrical service just to add an EV charger. That concern is well founded. One study found that upgrading electrical panels—the box in the garage or basement that distributes power throughout a home—can more than double the cost of charger installation.
Noble Carbon's Solution: Smart Circuit Breakers
Rather than ripping out the old panel, Noble Carbon has developed circuit breakers that eliminate the headache of installing an EV charger—or a heat pump or induction stove, for that matter. The Pittsfield, Massachusetts-based startup is one of 200 startups in this year's TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, a pitch competition at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco in October, where 20 finalists will present on the main stage.
Noble Carbon's breakers can adjust how much electricity they deliver to an EV charger in real time, allowing chargers to fit into otherwise at-capacity panels.
Why It Works: Real-Time Load Management
Electrical panels in homes are typically designed to handle absolute peak usage—something that might happen only "a handful of hours per year," Spencer Fields, Noble Carbon's head of marketing, told TechCrunch.
For example, when hosting family for a holiday, someone might simultaneously run the water heater, air conditioning, oven, and several TVs, all while every light in the house is on. The rest of the time, the electrical panel has room to spare.
2026 Context: Rising Demand for Home Electrification
As EV adoption accelerates and incentives for heat pumps and induction stoves expand in 2026, the need for affordable, non-invasive electrical upgrades has never been greater. Noble Carbon's technology addresses a critical bottleneck: enabling homes to support new high-power appliances without expensive service upgrades.
