Rivian CFO Claire McDonough to Step Down, Interim Successor Named
Rivian’s chief financial officer, Claire McDonough, is resigning from her position at the end of October, the company announced in a regulatory filing on Thursday. McDonough is stepping down to “pursue a new opportunity and relocate to the East Coast to be closer to her family,” according to the filing. Rivian emphasized that her resignation is “not the result of any disagreement” and is already searching for a permanent replacement. Derek Mulvey, the company’s vice president of finance, will serve as interim CFO following McDonough’s departure.
This leadership change comes at a pivotal time for Rivian, which is ramping up production and sales of its R2 SUV, a model that began shipping to customers this summer. The R2 is central to Rivian’s growth strategy as it aims to scale operations and compete more aggressively in the electric vehicle market. As of 2026, the company continues to face challenges including supply chain pressures and rising competition, making stable financial leadership critical. McDonough’s exit adds a layer of uncertainty, though the company’s swift appointment of an interim CFO suggests a measured transition.
This story is developing, and further updates are expected as Rivian provides more details on the search for a new CFO and any implications for its financial outlook.
