World, the online verification startup co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has raised $52.5 million through a private sale of its cryptocurrency token, WLD, to strategic investors. The company announced the raise on Friday, marking a significant infusion of capital as it seeks to scale its human-verification technology while the crypto market matures in 2026.

The investment round involved a 12-month lockup period, during which buyers cannot sell or trade their WLD tokens. The year-long commitment reflects investors’ “long-term commitment to World’s continued growth and utility,” the company stated in a press release.

Funds from the sale will be directed to the World Foundation, an exempted limited guarantee foundation based in the Cayman Islands, which oversees the expansion of World’s network. The lead buyer was Pantera Capital, a venture capital firm focused on digital assets. Other participants included Eightco Holdings, Bain Capital Crypto, Susquehanna Crypto, and Selini Capital, among others.

World is operated by Tools for Humanity, a San Francisco-based startup led by CEO and co-founder Alex Blania. Altman serves as the other co-founder. The project originally launched under the name “Worldcoin” but rebranded to World amid a broader backlash against the crypto industry, shifting focus toward utility.

How World’s Verification System Works

World centers on online verification, offering what it calls “proof of human” tools. As bots and AI-generate content proliferate online, the company argues it will become increasingly critical to distinguish humans from automated agents. World’s flagship product is the World ID—an anonymous digital credential that confirms a user is human, not a bot or AI agent.

To obtain a verified World ID—the highest security tier—users must have their irises scanned by an Orb, a metallic sphere that converts iris patterns into a unique cryptographic identifier. Orbs are stationed at World’s offices and partner retail locations around the world.

Scaling Efforts and Challenges

In April 2026, World launched a new version of its app and announced partnerships with major platforms, including Tinder and Ticketmaster, aiming to embed human verification into everyday digital interactions. Users can hold or trade WLD tokens through World’s app, which also functions as a custodial wallet.

Despite these advancements, World has struggled to scale its user base or generate widespread consumer interest in its mission. In June 2026, Tools for Humanity conducted a round of layoffs, signaling ongoing operational challenges amid ambitious growth targets.
