Google Chrome Is Closing the Loopholes That Let Old Ad Blockers Keep Working
Two Chrome updates scheduled for later this summer will eliminate the workarounds that have allowed older ad blockers—such as uBlock Origin—to continue functioning. These changes are part of Google's ongoing transition to Manifest V3, a new extension framework that limits the capabilities of content-blocking extensions. As of early 2026, the rollout has reached a critical phase: Chrome will disable the "force-installed" enterprise policies and other loopholes that previously let users bypass Manifest V3 restrictions. The updates aim to enforce stricter rules on network request modification, effectively requiring all ad blockers to adopt the newer, more limited API. Users who rely on legacy extensions will need to switch to Manifest V3-compatible alternatives or explore other browsers to maintain full ad-blocking functionality.
