Microsoft and Nvidia Partner on AI-Ready Windows PCs
In June 2026, Nvidia announced partnerships with Microsoft and other PC manufacturers to develop AI- and agent-ready Windows PCs powered by its RTX Spark chip. At the time, details about the machines were scarce.
Microsoft Reveals Surface Laptop Ultra and Dev Box
On Wednesday, at an event in San Francisco during the city's Tech Week, Microsoft unveiled the specs and pricing for its new Surface Laptop Ultra. The laptop comes in two base models: one starting at $2,600 and another with a more powerful chip starting at $3,700. Prices increase with additional memory and storage options, reaching up to $5,900. According to Microsoft, the highest-end configuration is already sold out.
Microsoft also introduced its new workstation, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, powered by the RTX Spark chip. It starts at $6,000 and includes Microsoft development tools such as VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7.
Designed for On-Device AI
Both the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box are designed to run AI models locally and for free, leveraging the CPU, GPU, unified memory, and hardware enhancements like advanced cooling to handle intensive workloads.
These devices run a revamped version of Windows 11 featuring "Execution Containers," a new capability that simplifies sandboxing AI agents. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced at the event that this feature will be available to all Windows 11 users.
Nadella explained: "One of the things we realized in the last 3-4 years is that just having a model doesn't do much for anything. You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model. You need to have this harnessed layer that is able to take multiple models plus context, plus memory, and the action space."
He added that Microsoft is enabling this "not just for our apps but apps for anyone's agent. That's what the Windows platform is all about going forward."
Targeting Developers with Trade-In Offers
The devices are clearly aimed at developers. Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 off for customers who trade in a MacBook Pro, as Macs have become a popular choice for developers and AI agent enthusiasts, especially in Silicon Valley.
Despite their developer focus, these Surface PCs with powerful graphics processing are also capable of content creation, video processing, and gaming, the company promises.
Dell Also Announces RTX Spark PC Details
Microsoft wasn't alone in announcing specs for its new Nvidia RTX Spark AI Windows PCs on Wednesday. Dell also revealed details of its previously announced Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition. It is available for pre-order now at Best Buy for $3,800, with delivery slated for later in October.
