Photon's Provocative Bet: Mobile Apps Are Dead, Long Live Agents
AI startup Photon is so convinced that agents will eventually replace mobile apps that it held a literal funeral for them—complete with a coffin, speeches, and a church venue in San Francisco. The company, which enables developers to build agents that operate over iMessage and WhatsApp, has now raised $4.5 million in seed funding to accelerate its mission.
The raise follows significant traction: Photon says it has signed up over 40,000 developers and grown revenue 10x in just four months. In 2026, as agentic AI moves from hype to mainstream deployment, Photon's bet reflects a broader shift in how users interact with digital services.
A Funeral with a Purpose
The "app funeral," held on September 17 in San Francisco, doubled as a developer day featuring panels from Vercel, Stripe, and OpenAI. An actual coffin for app icons drove home the tongue-in-cheek message. Co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian acknowledged the stunt was theatrical but stands by the underlying thesis.
"Honestly, it's going to take a while, but I think, directionally, it's inevitable," Tian said of the shift from apps to agents.
Why Agents Over Apps?
Photon's platform lets developers create conversational agents that live inside messaging apps users already open dozens of times a day. Instead of downloading yet another app, users can summon services directly in iMessage or WhatsApp. This approach taps into the growing agent economy, where AI-driven assistants handle tasks, transactions, and customer interactions seamlessly.
With fresh capital, Photon plans to expand its product suite and support its rapidly growing developer community. The company's 10x revenue growth in four months suggests early market validation—and perhaps that the app funeral wasn't premature after all.
