OpenAI Launches 'Dots' — and xAI May Have Already Pounced
On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled Dots, an always-on AI agent featuring a bubbly, blobby avatar. While the colorful mascot might draw a smile, the biggest laugh from the launch is (we imagine) being had by Elon Musk — the former OpenAI co-founder who left, launched the competing Grok chatbot, and later sued the company unsuccessfully.
The Suspicious Domain: dot.com
The reason? The domain dot.com belongs to Musk's xAI, and it currently redirects to the download page for xAI's Grok chatbot app. According to the Whois domain owner registry, that domain name was only recently transferred in July 2026.
An Innocent Explanation — or Something Funnier?
It is entirely possible that xAI bought the domain for ordinary, defensive reasons. "Dot" could be a typo of "bot," so snapping it up would help capture mistyped searches. We've reached out to xAI for comment. But note that xAI doesn't own "bot.com," nor does it own other obvious typo domains like "vot.com," which is currently listed for sale.
The internet's theory is far more entertaining: that Musk (or his team) caught wind of OpenAI's new product and its name, then bought the domain as a prank.
In fact, anonymous X user and xAI watcher @birdabo — who calls themselves "chief shitposting officer @SpaceXAI" — was the first to spot the domain in a now-viral post. Whatever the motivation, the situation is undeniably funny.
What About dots.com?
As for dots.com, a more direct match to the product name, it currently belongs to a long-defunct company. So if petty revenge really was the motivation, grabbing that name too would be next-level trolling.
