Shopify Opens Checkout to Browser-Based AI Agents
Shopify is betting that AI agents will shop on consumers' behalf—and it's building the infrastructure to let them. The e-commerce platform announced Monday that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on Shopify merchants' sites, extending their capabilities beyond product discovery and cart-building.
A Direct Contrast to Retailer Blockades
The move places Shopify in direct opposition to retailers such as Amazon and, reportedly, Adidas, which have moved to block AI agents from making purchases on users' behalf. Shopify is instead positioning agentic commerce as a feature, not a threat.
How It Works: WebMCP for Checkout
Shopify already supported WebMCP for its storefronts and carts, allowing browser-based AI agents to browse a merchant's inventory, search for products, and add items to a cart. The new update extends that support to checkout, including Shop Pay.
According to the company, agents can now read the checkout screen, update it, and submit the transaction with the buyer's authorization—without relying on screenshots or webpage scraping.
The integration introduces three new tools:
get_checkout— lets agents inspect the current checkout stateupdate_checkout— allows changes to details like the customer's address or delivery optioncomplete_checkout— places the order once the buyer authorizes it
Rollout and Availability
The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, according to Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager working on agentic commerce at Shopify, who shared the news in a post on X.
Shopping with an agent shouldn't feel like watching paint dry. 🥱 Today, we're launching WebMCP support for checkout, including Shop Pay, for all eligible Shopify merchants.

The Broader Agentic Commerce Picture
Shopify's announcement comes as the industry grapples with how AI agents should interact with commercial platforms. While some retailers erect barriers to prevent autonomous purchasing, Shopify is expanding its hosted infrastructure—including the Model Context Protocol—to make agent-driven transactions a native part of the shopping experience.
The technical approach matters. By using structured, protocol-based interactions rather than screenshot parsing or DOM scraping, Shopify aims to make AI agent purchases more reliable, secure, and auditable for both merchants and buyers.
