OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it is bringing voice-based agentic features to its mobile app, allowing users to trigger workflows such as drafting documents or summarizing emails through voice commands.
What Plus and Pro Users Can Do
Plus and Pro subscribers will be able to use the Work tab on their phone to create a document, draft an email, or summarize Slack messages. These subscribers can also build sites, create presentations, use the cloud browser, and access other areas such as finances within ChatGPT. Free and Go users, meanwhile, will gain access to plugins and connected apps.
Enhanced Voice and Cross-Device Continuity
OpenAI said ChatGPT's voice conversations will now deliver richer text output. In addition, users will be able to switch easily between text and voice. They can also start a conversation on the go and resume it later on desktop, streamlining workflows across devices.
The feature arrives as an increasing number of users are turning to voice to issue commands to AI assistants for complex tasks. In July, OpenAI launched its new conversational model GPT-Live and later integrated it with the desktop app, enabling users to complete tasks in the Work tab or build apps in the Codex tab via voice. The latest rollout brings similar capabilities to the mobile app.
Competitive Context
Recently, Anthropic made handoffs between mobile and desktop easier and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces. OpenAI, by contrast, is still keeping chat and workspaces separate.
