Huawei Moves Up Timeline for Next-Gen AI Chip


Huawei announced at its annual Huawei Connect conference on Thursday that it is accelerating the launch of its next-generation Ascend 960DT AI chip to the first quarter of 2027, pulling the timeline forward from its previously planned Q3 2027 release, a company spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch.


"The Ascend 960DT is expected to be ready in Q1 2027. Ascend 960 chips are launching ahead of schedule, doubling performance and advancing year by year," the spokesperson said. David Wang, Huawei's rotating and acting chairman, unveiled the revised timeline during the conference.


The announcement comes just one week before U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet on September 24 in Washington, D.C., adding geopolitical weight to the company's technological ambitions.


Peerium Computing Architecture and the SuperPoD Vision


Huawei is pursuing an ambitious strategy to transform hundreds of thousands—and eventually millions—of AI chips into a single, massive computing system. The company calls this approach its Peerium Computing Architecture, which relies on UnifiedBus, Huawei's proprietary technology for interconnecting processors with memory, storage, and networking hardware.


Eric Xu, Huawei's rotating chairman, stated that the company is leveraging Peerium to build larger AI computing systems designed for both training and inference workloads. The first systems built on this architecture are the Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster. According to Huawei, an Atlas 950 SuperCluster can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards.


Scaling Questions Emerge


The accelerated chip timeline has raised questions about Huawei's broader AI system plans. China tech analyst Rui Ma noted on X that Huawei had previously indicated its Atlas 960 SuperPoD would scale to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips, but this week's announcement referenced a system with only 4,096 chips.


"The chip itself is coming WAY earlier, but the SuperPoD they announced is much smaller than what they originally laid out," Ma wrote, highlighting a discrepancy between the company's earlier projections and its current disclosures.


Navigating U.S. Restrictions


Huawei has continued to advance its semiconductor ambitions despite U.S. restrictions on China's access to advanced chipmaking technology. Ma suggested that such restrictions are unlikely to deter China's semiconductor development efforts.


"I think it's futile to stop China's development in semiconductors because the stakes for self-sufficiency are just too high at this point," she wrote.


The competitive dynamic extends beyond hardware. Trump has rejected calls from AI industry leaders to slow development over safety concerns, arguing the U.S. must maintain its lead over China. Meanwhile, Xu has argued that China needs to accelerate AI development to catch up with the U.S., stating that Chinese companies must advance further before they can fully understand and address the risks posed by more powerful AI systems, according to the Financial Times.


A Defining Race


As the global AI race intensifies, Huawei's accelerated chip timeline signals its determination to compete with Nvidia at the highest level. The coming months—particularly the Trump-Xi meeting and the lead-up to the Ascend 960DT's Q1 2027 debut—will likely prove pivotal in shaping the future of AI infrastructure and the broader semiconductor landscape.
