Listen Labs, a market research startup leveraging voice AI to automate customer interviews, recently signed a term sheet for a $125 million Series C round at a $1.5 billion valuation, with Menlo Ventures set to lead the investment, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. However, the round never closed, as the company walked away from the signed agreement—a rare and typically frowned-upon move in the venture capital world, several VCs noted.
The financing likely collapsed due to ongoing acquisition discussions with Salesforce, the CRM giant. Salesforce has reportedly been in talks to acquire Listen Labs for approximately $2 billion, as Business Insider first reported. These negotiations are not yet finalized and may not result in a deal, according to sources.
Listen Labs has emerged as a leader in the rapidly expanding field of AI-driven customer research. Founded three years ago, the startup generates roughly $30 million in annualized revenue—about three times that of competitor Simile, which specializes in predicting human behavior. In late July, Simile announced a $200 million Series B at a $2 billion valuation, led by Greenoaks, potentially setting a new benchmark for Listen Labs' valuation, one source said.
Should the Salesforce talks fall through, several VCs told TechCrunch they expect Listen Labs to return to the market seeking a valuation of at least $2 billion. While acquiring Listen Labs could enhance Salesforce's AI capabilities by predicting customer needs, the CRM giant may ultimately balk at the steep price—roughly 67 times Listen Labs' revenue—according to a person with experience negotiating exits to Salesforce.
Listen Labs, Salesforce, Menlo Ventures, and Simile did not respond to requests for comment.
Founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann, a former German national champion in competitive programming, and Alfred Wahlforss, who previously started a staffing firm called Bemlo, the company's AI designs survey questions and conducts customer interviews via audio or video. These conversations are then synthesized into reports and PowerPoint decks, mirroring the output of traditional human market researchers.
Fortune 500 companies rely on such research to gauge customer needs and satisfaction, but conventional methods are costly and can take weeks. Listen Labs' technology dramatically reduces both time and cost, enabling businesses to quickly assess reactions to product changes and iterate efficiently. Its clients include Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen.
Listen Labs and Simile are not alone in disrupting the customer research space; other competitors include Ou (name truncated), signaling a rapidly maturing market as AI continues to reshape how companies understand their customers.
