Instacart Launches Clementine, an AI-Powered Grocery Shopping Assistant
Instacart has become the latest app to integrate a conversational AI assistant into its platform. On Wednesday, the company unveiled Clementine, an AI-powered grocery shopping assistant designed to transform conversations, grocery lists, or recipes into a ready-to-purchase cart.
Clementine aims to help users decide what to cook for dinner, streamline grocery shopping, and stay within budget, according to Instacart. For example, users can ask queries such as, “I need a week of budget-friendly kids’ lunches,” “high-protein, easy dinners for two,” or “order my usuals.”
Instacart is not alone in this space. As of 2026, competitors like Uber Eats and DoorDash have also introduced similar AI assistants that convert natural-language requests and grocery lists into personalized carts, signaling a broader trend in the delivery industry.
This shift indicates that delivery apps are no longer just marketplaces for finding and purchasing groceries; they are becoming platforms where consumers make pre-purchase decisions. These companies are now competing not only on delivery speed and product variety but also on becoming the default meal-planning tool for households. Additionally, they aim to retain users within their own ecosystems for grocery and meal planning, rather than losing them to general-purpose AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
Instacart reports that Clementine can generate personalized recipes or suggest ones from trusted publishers. It also customizes recommendations based on each household’s preferences, including dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, or organic options.
The assistant also highlights relevant deals and promotions, and suggests lower-cost alternatives. Users can upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital one, and Clementine will convert it into a cart.
“Every night, millions of families ask the same question: ‘What’s for dinner?’ Not knowing the answer, let alone what to shop for, is one of the most universal human experiences, and a problem Instacart is built to solve,” said Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart, in an emailed press release. “We’ve spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work.”
Clementine is now available in the U.S. and Canada.
