Google is deepening its integration of AI across its services. The company has announced that its personal agent, Gemini Spark, can now manage your Google Photos library. With this update, you can ask Gemini Spark to execute a variety of tasks in Google Photos—such as editing images, curating albums, auto-creating shared albums with your top shots, converting concert flyer photos into calendar appointments, running custom workflows, and more.
On Thursday evening, Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben-Yar shared the new capabilities in a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the rollout will occur over the next few weeks for eligible Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., with support for English initially. The company has not specified whether or when the feature will expand to international markets.
This move is a further example of Google’s attempt to find product-market fit for AI by automating tedious tasks and helping users manage what are now often sizable photo libraries. It also comes at a time when the AI industry is grappling with a disconnect between its technological advances and consumer adoption. In a recent conversation with Bloomberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that the industry has fumbled in communicating the benefits of AI, which has led to public backlash in various communities.
However, announcements like Google’s latest feature are part of the problem. While features like these make certain tasks easier—like creating a photo album—they may not, on their own, seem revolutionary or even essential. After all, making a photo album isn't that difficult. Yet the competitive nature of the AI industry is driving companies to tout every AI-infused upgrade, no matter how minor, instead of waiting until they can convey a broader narrative about how AI is meaningfully enhancing their software and users’ lives.
To use Gemini Spark with Google Photos, you’ll need to first connect Google Photos to Gemini, then toggle on Spark in the top corner of the Gemini app, and enter your prompt or command.
