Anthropic Unveils Fable 5.1: Enhanced Performance at Lower Cost

On Tuesday, Anthropic unveiled Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, twin iterations of the company's most advanced AI models. Beyond performance enhancements, the new Fable release introduces features aimed at reducing token costs and minimizing false-positive restrictions from the model's safety systems.

As with its predecessor, Mythos 5.1 is exclusively available to authorized Anthropic partners engaged in cybersecurity or life sciences research. In contrast, Fable 5.1—the unrestricted version—is now accessible via cloud platforms or the Anthropic API, effective immediately.

Zero Data Retention and Enterprise Safeguards

One of the most notable changes is Anthropic's adoption of Zero Data Retention, a feature previously reported by Axios. This enables clients to run Anthropic models on their own infrastructure without sending data back to the company. Previously unavailable for Fable due to security concerns, this high-privacy option—branded as 'Enterprise Frontier Safeguards'—will roll out to users in June 2026. Importantly, the system will continue to monitor for misuse by agents or human users, but clients will have control over how that monitoring is implemented.

As part of the announcement, Anthropic reassured customers about data privacy: 'Anthropic has never trained on enterprise data without explicit permission, and never will,' the statement reads. This commitment aims to address long-standing enterprise concerns about data security in AI deployments.

Benchmark Records and Scientific Contributions

Consistent with Anthropic's track record, the new models have set records across various benchmarks, including Terminal-Bench 4.0 for CLI-based coding and Humanity's Last Exam for general reasoning. Additionally, Anthropic shared three novel scientific findings generated by the models prior to release, such as a custom GPU optimization and a high-resolution map of Venus assembled from existing imagery. These contributions highlight the models' potential to accelerate research and innovation.

System Card and Risk Assessment

As with previous releases, the models come with a detailed system card that transparently outlines their capabilities. The system card categorizes Mythos as 'low-risk' concerning automated AI development, where the AI could potentially improve itself—a scenario some experts view as a trigger for loss of human control. It states, 'its ability to accelerate internal AI R&D progress is in line with current trends,' underscoring the measured pace of advancement.

However, Mythos 5.1 shows a slight increase in general misbehavior compared to Opus 5, likely due to its enhanced capabilities. The system card notes, 'Mythos 5.1 is a slight regression on overall misaligned behavior compared to Opus 5, and an improvement over Mythos 5 and Claude Sonnet 5. It cooperates with human misuse and accepts unverifiable claims of authorization somewhat more readily than Opus 5, but it is less likely to ignore explicit constraints, hallucinate inputs, or falsely claim to have completed tasks than previous models.'

These nuanced trade-offs reflect Anthropic's ongoing commitment to balancing capability with safety, as the company continues to refine its models for both enterprise and research applications.
