OpenAI to Introduce Ads on ChatGPT's Free and Go Tiers in India

OpenAI has confirmed that it will begin displaying ads on its ChatGPT Free and Go subscription tiers in India, marking a significant shift in its monetization strategy as the company prepares for a potential IPO. The announcement, made on Thursday, follows a recent update to OpenAI's terms of service that signaled the introduction of advertisements within the AI assistant. This move is part of a broader effort to diversify revenue streams beyond subscriptions. India is a key market for OpenAI, with over 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users in the country, as stated by the company in February. A substantial portion of these users are on the free or lower-priced Go tiers, making India a prime location for ad-based monetization. OpenAI plans to launch with ads from 50 brands, partnering with major advertising agencies WPP and Omnicom. Additionally, the company will introduce an ad manager next month, allowing marketers to create campaigns with a daily minimum budget of β‚Ή725 (approximately $7.60). This tool aims to democratize access to advertising on the platform, enabling businesses of all sizes to reach users at pivotal moments. Dave Dugan, head of global ads solutions at OpenAI, emphasized the strategic intent: "With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape." OpenAI's aggressive push into the Indian market includes previous initiatives such as launching a sub-$5 plan for ChatGPT Go in August 2025 and offering a free year of the Go tier in a limited promotion. The company has also invested heavily in local marketing, including advertising during popular cricket tournaments like the Women's Premier League (WPL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL). More recently, OpenAI hired Uber's India head to lead its expansion, underscoring the country's strategic importance. The ad rollout in India follows similar moves in the United States, where ads began appearing in February, and in Europe, where the program expanded earlier this month. These steps are part of a global strategy to monetize free users, which is critical as OpenAI reports revenue of $6.7 billion for the second quarter of 2026, up from $5.7 billion in the previous quarter, according to The Wall Street Journal. With an IPO anticipated within the next year, OpenAI is under pressure to solidify its financial position. The Information reported in November that OpenAI aims to reach 220 million paying subscribers by 2030, up from 35 million paying users for its Plus and Pro plans at that time. Ads on lower tiers could provide a significant new revenue stream while maintaining user growth.
