Meet the Startup Helping Wall Street Put a Price on AI Compute
The AI buildout continues at a breakneck pace, with hundreds of billions of dollars flowing annually into data centers and GPUs. Compute has thus become the single largest cost for companies developing AI products. Yet, despite this massive investment, there remains no straightforward method to price compute—or for firms to hedge against price fluctuations. Enter Silicon Data, a startup that has just closed a $30 million Series A to address this gap. The company aims to establish itself as the reference price for GPU rentals and to create an index that Wall Street futures contracts could settle against. Silicon Data plans to launch its compute futures trading on the CME on October 5, 2026, pending regulatory approval.
On this episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, host Rebecca Bellan is joined by Steve Hou, head of research at Silicon Data, to discuss the current state of the AI buildout. They explore why the data tells a more nuanced story than the doom-and-gloom headlines about depreciating chips and stalled data center projects in states like Texas and New York. The conversation also touches on how financial instruments could bring much-needed stability to the volatile AI infrastructure market.
