Google Gemini Now Lets You Disable Visible Watermarks

Google has rolled out a new feature that allows users to turn off the visible watermark on AI-generated content in Gemini, while retaining invisible digital provenance measures. This move, announced in early 2026, aims to enhance user flexibility without compromising on content authenticity.

What’s Changing

Previously, all AI-generated images, videos, and music produced through Gemini carried a visible watermark—a subtle label indicating AI involvement. With this update, users can now disable that visible marker in the settings, streamlining content for professional or personal use where a visible stamp might be unwelcome.

However, Google is not abandoning its commitment to transparency. The company will continue to embed invisible SynthID watermarks—a technology that embeds a pattern undetectable to the human eye but identifiable by software—into all AI-generated media. Additionally, C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) metadata will still be attached, which provides a cryptographic trail of an asset’s origin and edits. This dual approach ensures that while the visual cue is optional, the underlying authenticity checks remain robust.

Why It Matters

In 2026, as AI-generated content becomes ubiquitous across marketing, entertainment, and personal projects, the demand for clean, unmarked outputs has grown. Visible watermarks, while useful for transparency, can disrupt artistic visions or brand aesthetics. By allowing users to hide them, Google is responding to user feedback and competitive pressure from other AI platforms that already offer similar toggles.

Nevertheless, this flexibility raises questions about misuse. Without a visible label, could AI-created content be mistakenly presented as human-made? Google argues that the invisible SynthID and C2PA measures are more reliable than a watermark, which can be cropped or edited out. Moreover, SynthID is designed to persist even after screenshots, filters, or compression, making it a stronger deterrent against misuse.

How to Turn It Off

Users can access this setting within Gemini’s interface, typically under the generation options or account preferences. Once disabled, the visible watermark disappears from newly generated content, but the invisible markers remain intact. Google has also stated that the toggle will be available across all Gemini tiers, including free and paid plans, starting with the latest update.

The Future of AI Transparency

This change is part of a broader industry trend where AI companies balance user control with ethical responsibilities. While the debate over AI labeling continues, Google’s move sets a precedent: visible indicators can be optional, but invisible guardians are here to stay. As deepfakes and misinformation grow more sophisticated, the effectiveness of SynthID and C2PA will be critical in maintaining trust in digital media.

For now, Gemini users gain greater creative freedom, but the invisible safety net ensures that accountability remains just under the surface.
