Google's Gemini App Surges Past 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

In a major achievement for Google, CEO Sundar Pichai announced via X that the Gemini app has become one of the company's fastest-growing products, recently surpassing 1 billion monthly active users. Pichai highlighted that this marks Gemini as the 14th Google product to reach the 1 billion user milestone. This rapid growth places Gemini in direct competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which achieved 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026. Google has been steadily integrating Gemini across its ecosystem, from Search and Workspace to Android and its standalone mobile app. Notably, Google's AI Mode in Search has also seen significant success, with over 1 billion monthly active users globally. However, today's figure refers specifically to the Gemini app and does not include AI users from other channels. The company continues to push forward with new models and features, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which Google says is designed to enhance coding capabilities and autonomous AI-agent tasks. This reflects Google's broader strategy of focusing on AI agents rather than just chatbots. Google has also shared insights into how users interact with the Gemini app: 63% of users engage with the assistant through voice features, and Gemini now generates more than 150 million images daily. Furthermore, Gemini's growth extends beyond Google's own platforms, with over 100 million active users on iOS. This milestone follows Google's Q2 2026 earnings call, during which the company reported over 950 million monthly users and noted that daily active users had tripled over the past year. The announcement also comes just ahead of Google's Made by Google event, where more Gemini-powered features are expected to debut across Pixel devices.
