OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap Departs to Launch New Venture

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI's longest-serving executives, is leaving the AI powerhouse to "start something new," according to an internal message he shared online Tuesday. The outgoing executive described the move as "bittersweet," telling staff, "I'll be moving on from OpenAI to start something new." Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, serving as chief financial officer for four years before becoming chief operating officer in 2022. He held that role until earlier this year, when he transitioned to lead special projects amid a broader executive reshuffle. Prior to OpenAI, Lightcap worked with CEO Sam Altman at venture capital firm Y Combinator. In his message, Lightcap reflected on his tenure: "I had the privilege of building the first versions of most of our operations and business teams – from Finance to Legal, People, CorpSec, GTM/Gov, Partnerships, and more. Among the most rewarding parts of this journey for me has been watching each of these teams mature under brilliant leaders." While Lightcap offered few details about his next steps, he hinted at a new venture focused on emerging challenges in the AI landscape. "Over the last few months, I've been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success," he wrote. "I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period. I'll have more to share soon, but I believe in OpenAI more than ever and am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point." Lightcap's departure comes as OpenAI prepares for an IPO of industry-wide significance, with the company undergoing significant executive turnover. In July, Fidji Simo, who led AGI development as the company's No. 2 executive, announced she would step down. Other recent departures include Bill Peebles, who headed the now-shuttered video generator Sora, and Kevin Weil, vice president of the company's Science vertical.
