Threads Users Can Now Chat with Meta AI in Their DMs

Meta has announced that its AI chatbot, Meta AI, is now rolling out within Threads’ direct messages (DMs), allowing users to chat privately with the assistant. Previously, Threads users in select markets could interact with Meta AI in public posts—similar to how users engage with Grok on X—but this new feature extends the capability to private conversations. By providing an easier way to access an AI chatbot directly within the app, Meta aims to keep users engaged within its ecosystem and discourage reliance on third-party assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Gemini. Meta AI is already available in DMs across Meta’s other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and this launch marks the first time it is integrated into Threads. The new integration allows users to share Threads posts, images, links, and videos directly with Meta AI. Users can also ask follow-up questions and dive deeper into topics. Meta stated that the update will roll out globally starting Monday, July 2026. In addition to private DMs, Meta is continuing to test Meta AI’s presence in Threads’ public feeds in a handful of global markets. The company is gathering feedback before expanding availability more broadly. For users who wish to see fewer Meta AI replies in their feed, options include muting @meta.ai, using the “Not interested” feature on any Meta AI post, or hiding Meta AI replies that appear on their own posts. By deepening Meta AI’s integration into Threads, Meta is positioning its X rival as a platform where users can access information and recommendations without needing to leave the app.
