Google AI Overviews Now Default in Nearly Half of All Searches

AI-powered search is rapidly becoming the default experience for users—whether they embrace the change or not. According to a new report from market intelligence firm Similarweb, Google’s AI-generated answers, known as AI Overviews, now appear in 43% of all searches, up from just 15% a year earlier. This marks a significant acceleration in the adoption of generative AI as a core component of the search journey. In its analysis of the 2026 generative AI landscape, Similarweb notes that what began as an AI overlay on traditional search has evolved into an integral part of the experience. Google now places users directly into AI Overviews, where they can continue their research using the more conversational AI Mode. The result is a fundamental shift in how people consume information online. The data also reveals substantial growth for AI Mode itself. Visits to the feature rose from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026, nearly doubling in less than a year. This trend underscores a broader transformation: Google is moving away from its role as a simple gateway to other websites and toward becoming a destination in its own right—sourcing answers directly from the web pages it indexes. As a consequence, users are spending more time on Google’s platform rather than using it solely as a tool to discover external sites. Similarweb reports that the average length of search queries has increased over the past year, suggesting that people are replacing short, keyword-based searches with longer, more natural conversational phrases designed to get the most out of AI-powered responses. This evolution signals a new era for web search, where AI not only assists but increasingly defines the user experience. With AI Overviews now approaching a majority of queries, the line between search engine and answer engine continues to blur.
