OpenAI announced on Thursday that its ChatGPT desktop app now supports ChatGPT Voice, enabling users to speak to the app to control AI agents and perform tasks directly on their computer.
The feature is powered by OpenAI’s latest voice model family, ChatGPT-Live, which launched earlier this month. ChatGPT Voice is compatible with both ChatGPT Work and Codex, and can leverage computer use skills to browse websites and applications. On macOS, Appshots allows the app to access on-screen content, including alt-text.
The smartphone version of ChatGPT Voice, released earlier, offered smoother conversations with improved interruption handling but lacked the ability to take action on mobile devices. The new desktop update is significantly more capable, letting users dictate complex, multi-step commands and receive real-time responses when ChatGPT needs further input.
In a demonstration video, OpenAI showed a developer using a single command to create a new thread, make a pull request, and identify the root cause of a bug. Users can also access ChatGPT Voice in Codex remotely via the iOS app.
Competitor Anthropic recently updated Claude’s voice mode, integrating it with Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models to perform tasks in apps like Gmail, Calendar, Slack, Notion, and Canva.
