Alexa Plus Gets AI Upgrade to Handle Complex Instructions
Amazon has announced a major AI update for Alexa Plus, its premium voice assistant, designed to interpret and execute more complicated instructions across a broader ecosystem of smart home devices.
Previously limited to straightforward commands like "turn on the lights" or "play music," the upgraded Alexa Plus now leverages advanced natural language processing (NLP) to handle multi-step requests. For example, users can say, "Alexa, if I leave the house after sunset, turn off all the lights, lock the front door, and set the thermostat to eco mode." The assistant processes this as a single, coherent task rather than requiring separate commands.
This enhancement builds on Amazon's ongoing investment in generative AI, which began with the initial launch of Alexa Plus in 2023. The 2026 update integrates a new large language model (LLM) that improves contextual understanding, enabling the assistant to infer user intent from vague or incomplete prompts. For instance, "make the living room cozy" now triggers a sequence: dimming smart bulbs, adjusting the thermostat, and playing ambient music—all without explicit device names.
Compatibility has also widened. Alexa Plus now supports over 100,000 smart home devices from brands like Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, and Ecobee, up from 50,000 in 2024. This expansion includes newer categories such as smart blinds, robotic vacuums, and kitchen appliances, allowing for more integrated home automation.
Security remains a priority. The update includes enhanced privacy controls, giving users the option to review voice history and disable recording for specific device categories. Amazon claims no audio data is stored on-device unless explicitly permitted.
Looking ahead, Amazon plans to roll out these features globally by mid-2026, with a subscription cost of $5.99 per month (included with Amazon Prime). Beta testing begins next month for select users in the U.S.
This move positions Alexa Plus as a direct competitor to Google Assistant and Apple's Siri, both of which have also received LLM-based upgrades in recent months. As the smart home market grows—projected to exceed $200 billion by 2027—Amazon aims to solidify its lead by making voice control smarter and more intuitive.
