Google DeepMind Bets $75M on AI’s Future in Hollywood with A24 Deal

Hollywood Meets Silicon Valley: A Landmark AI Partnership

A new alliance between a major Hollywood studio and a tech giant signals a significant step in artificial intelligence's integration into filmmaking. On Monday, Google DeepMind announced a $75 million investment into A24, the acclaimed independent film studio behind hits like “Marty Supreme,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” and the recent blockbuster “Backrooms.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google DeepMind characterizes the investment as a partnership — a “first-of-its-kind” collaboration that will see the two companies co-create AI tools for film production. In exchange, Google DeepMind will receive “feedback and guidance from leading artists,” many of whom have worked with A24 on high-profile projects featuring stars like Timothée Chalamet and Anne Hathaway.

“We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them,” said Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, in a press release. “By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.”

Industry-Wide Moves Toward AI in Filmmaking

While the use of AI in Hollywood has stirred debate, A24 is far from the first studio to explore this frontier. In 2026, Netflix announced it was acquiring Ben Affleck’s company, Interpositive, which specializes in AI tools for filmmakers. Earlier this year, Amazon’s MGM Studios launched an AI unit dedicated to developing tools for television and movie production.

As the industry grapples with both the creative potential and ethical challenges of AI, the DeepMind-A24 deal marks a major bet that direct collaboration between technologists and artists can produce tools that enhance — rather than replace — human storytelling.
