Nous Research Launches Bot Mode for Hermes Agent, Transforming Agent Profiles into a Roster of Named Bots

Nous Research has introduced Bot Mode for its MIT-licensed, open-source agent, Hermes Agent. This new feature replaces the single-agent session list with a roster of named bots, each representing a full Hermes profile equipped with its own chat history, memory, skills, and pinned model. Bots can interact with one another through a persistent Agent Inbox and delegate tasks using @mention commands. Initially released as a one-day public beta plugin by co-founder Teknium, Bot Mode is now bundled and enabled by default in Hermes Desktop, starting with Hermes Agent v0.20.3.

Is It Deployable?

Yes โ€” today, on a desktop, at no licensing cost. Bot Mode is available as part of the Hermes Desktop application, accessible via Settings โ†’ Plugins. Both the Hermes Agent and the Bot Mode plugin are MIT licensed, making them freely usable for personal and commercial projects.

Who can use it: Solo developers, startups, and small-to-medium engineering teams can adopt Bot Mode immediately. However, enterprises should view it as a workstation tool rather than managed infrastructure. The current version lacks an admin console, single sign-on (SSO), central audit logging, and policy enforcement. Organizations in regulated industries will need to implement their own governance and security controls around its use.
