Alibaba's Qwen team has made Qwen3.8-Max broadly available, with open weights expected to ship next week. Additionally, a second checkpoint—Qwen3.8-27B—is also slated for open-weights release. Qwen3.8-Max is a 2.4-trillion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model that accepts text, image, and video inputs while generating text outputs.

Is It Deployable?

Yes, but the deployment surface varies depending on the artifact in question.

Hosted API: The hosted API is immediately deployable for companies of any size. It is compatible with OpenAI and DashScope, requiring only a base-URL and model-ID change for integration. This makes adoption straightforward for existing workflows.

Open Weights: The open weights present a different consideration. At 2.4 trillion total parameters, the checkpoint is a multi-node datacenter artifact, not suitable for typical on-premise hardware. Alibaba has not disclosed the activated-parameter count, so serving costs cannot yet be accurately modeled. For those with standard GPU infrastructure, Qwen3.8-27B is the more practical option.
