The Download: Anthropic Launches Claude Science, and California’s Carbon Manure Math
Plus: The US has lifted restrictions on Anthropic’s Mythos and Fable models.
This is today's edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology.
Claude Science is Anthropic’s newest flagship product
At an event for pharmaceutical executives, biotech founders, and researchers yesterday, Anthropic announced Claude Science—a major new product designed to support scientific research much like Claude Code supports software engineering.
Similar to Claude Code, Claude Science can autonomously execute meaningful tasks from concise, high-level instructions, with specialized tools for computational biology and drug development. This launch signals that Anthropic is doubling down on AI for science—and the company plans to use the product in its own research into drugs for rare, neglected diseases.

Why California’s carbon manure math doesn’t add up
Something stinks in California’s climate policies. Years ago, the state established a system that pays cattle farmers to convert methane emitted from manure into natural gas. However, as of 2026, critics argue that the program’s carbon accounting is fundamentally flawed—overstating emissions reductions while potentially enabling more pollution elsewhere. This raises tough questions about how the state measures climate progress and whether such incentive programs truly deliver net environmental benefits.
