Fairphone, the Dutch company renowned for its sustainable and repair-friendly smartphones, announced on Tuesday that its latest device, the Fairphone 6+, is now available in the United States, with pricing starting at $649.
Previously, Fairphone partnered with French open-source OS developer e/OS to sell a "de-Googled" version of its earlier models in the US. However, this marks the first time US consumers can purchase a Fairphone directly, without any modifications. The Fairphone 6+ will support T-Mobile and AT&T networks at launch.
Positioned as a mid-range Android option, the Fairphone 6+ arrives amid rising consumer electronics prices driven by ongoing component shortages. Its repairability and longevity make it an increasingly attractive proposition for budget-conscious and environmentally aware buyers.
"We're delivering a device built from the ground up to be opened, repaired, and kept alive for many years," said Fairphone CEO Raymond van Eck.
Under the hood, the Fairphone 6+ is powered by Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor, paired with 12GB of RAM. The device houses a 4,415mAh battery supporting 30W fast charging, and features a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
For photography, the main camera sports a 50-megapixel Sony sensor with an f/1.88 aperture, complemented by a 13-megapixel ultrawide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. The front-facing selfie camera is a 32-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. While these specs should deliver solid daylight shots, low-light performance may be less impressive—I'd personally have preferred a telephoto lens over the ultrawide in this dual-camera setup.
The Fairphone 6+'s standout feature is its modular design, offering 12 replaceable components including the battery, cameras, USB-C port, and display, all swappable with a single screwdriver. The company backs this with a five-year warranty and software support extending to 2033.
Fairphone also emphasizes sustainability in manufacturing, claiming a reduced carbon footprint of just 30 kg of CO2e per device produced.
The Fairphone 6+ is available in Forest Green, Horizon Black, and Cobalt Blue. Accessories such as a finger loop, lanyard, and card holder are also sold separately, easily attachable by removing the back cover.
