If you've ever wanted to share your digital conversations with OpenAI, the wait is over. The AI lab has launched an Apple Messages plug-in for ChatGPT, allowing users to connect their Messages inbox directly to the chatbot. This integration, first reported in August 2026, marks a significant step in integrating AI with everyday communication tools.
OpenAI highlights several benefits. Users can sort, analyze, or edit messages directly from ChatGPT. The plug-in also works with Codex and ChatGPT Work, extending its utility beyond personal use to professional environments. For example, a brief commercial showcases a user asking ChatGPT to suggest follow-up messages based on the previous day's conversations.
Beyond that, you can ask ChatGPT to delete messages, draft and send messages on your behalf, or search for information buried deep in your message history. This feature aims to streamline your messaging workflow, making it more efficient and less time-consuming.
However, as with most AI features, privacy concerns arise. OpenAI told Bloomberg that the plug-in runs locally on a user's machine and "doesn't create an index of all someone's messages." Yet, the specifics remain unclear, and TechCrunch has reached out for clarification. OpenAI also advises users to monitor ChatGPT's actions, discouraging persistent approval as it "removes your final chance to review a message before ChatGPT sends it as you."
