Trump Administration Allows Anthropic’s Mythos 5 for Over 100 US Firms and Agencies
Just two weeks after a government ban forced Anthropic to pull its powerful cybersecurity-focused models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, from the market, the Trump administration is reversing course. The ban had originally prohibited non-US individuals from accessing these models, including Anthropic's own non-American employees.
Now, the administration is allowing Anthropic to make Mythos 5 available to more than 100 specific US government agencies and companies, according to reports from Semafor and Reuters. This includes granting access to non-US employees at those organizations, as well as Anthropic’s own non-American staff, who were originally barred.
In a letter dated Friday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic’s chief compute officer Tom Brown, “I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model.” The letter was reviewed by Semafor.
Notably, the directive did not address the release of Fable 5—a version of Mythos 5 that had been widely released just days before the ban, purportedly with stronger protections. Both models were pulled after security researchers successfully bypassed those guardrails with relative ease. Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In a public statement on X, Anthropic acknowledged the progress: “Since June 12, we’ve been working closely with the US government to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. We’re restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we’re continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again.”
