Amazon CEO Allegedly Raised Anthropic Model Security Concerns Ahead of U.S. Government Crackdown

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy may have been the source of the security concerns that led Anthropic to cut off worldwide access to two of its models on Friday, June 12, 2026. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Jassy informed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other government officials that Amazon researchers had used Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 model to obtain information that could be leveraged in cyberattacks. This prompted the U.S. government to impose an export control ban on both the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. A spokesperson for Amazon told the WSJ that while it is “not uncommon for governments to seek our counsel on potential security risks,” the company does not “share the details of those discussions.” The Information and Reuters similarly reported that Amazon—a major investor in Anthropic—had communicated concerns about the security of the startup’s advanced AI models. David Sacks, who served as Trump’s AI czar and now co-chairs the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, offered his own account of the discussions. On X, Sacks claimed that “a highly credible trusted partner of both Anthropic and the USG […] came forward with [information about] a jailbreak.” He added, “The Admin asked [Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei] to fix the jailbreak or de-deploy the model. Dario refused.”
