Mistral Reportedly in Talks to Raise €3B at €20B Valuation

French AI lab Mistral AI is in early-stage discussions to raise approximately €3 billion ($3.5 billion), according to a Bloomberg report published Friday, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

The potential funding round would value the company at around €20 billion (roughly $23.15 billion)—nearly double the €11.7 billion valuation it attained during its Series C round in September 2025, as noted in a press release.

Background and Strategic Position

Launched in 2023, Mistral AI is one of Europe's leading artificial intelligence startups. Its stated mission is to “put frontier AI in the hands of everyone.” In contrast to many American counterparts, Mistral takes a more open approach to AI development. The company offers several foundational large language models with open weights, enabling developers to customize them freely.

Mistral also provides closed, proprietary models tailored for specialized use cases, including programming assistance, voice cloning and generation, and optical character recognition.

Growing Demand for Sovereign AI

In 2026, as European governments and enterprises increasingly seek to reduce reliance on American technology, Mistral has positioned itself as a friendly, “sovereign,” homegrown alternative. The company is building a data center near Paris and has formed strategic partnerships with the French military, the government of Luxembourg, and several major European companies.

Funding Gap vs. U.S. Competitors

Despite its rapid growth, Mistral has raised only about $4 billion to date (according to PitchBook)—a fraction of the funds secured by U.S. rivals OpenAI ($186 billion) and Anthropic ($161.25 billion). Those American labs also command far higher valuations, reflecting their larger revenue streams, broader model adoption, and stronger enterprise demand.

Mistral did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
