Jeff Bezos’s Prometheus raises $12B to build an ‘artificial general engineer’ for the physical world

Massive Funding Round for Physical AI Pioneer

Prometheus, a physical AI startup co-founded by Jeff Bezos and Vik Bajaj—former co-founder of Verily, Google's life sciences division—has announced a $12 billion funding round at a $41 billion valuation. This investment represents one of the largest single bets on the physical AI sector to date.

Key Investors and Company Background

The fresh capital comes from Bezos himself, along with JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock, among others. This marks the second fundraising round for Prometheus, which launched late last year with an initial $6.2 billion raise, according to CNBC.

Ambitious Vision: The 'Artificial General Engineer'

Prometheus is developing what it calls an 'artificial general engineer'—software designed to automate the design and manufacturing of complex physical systems, ranging from jet engines to drug compounds. The company's sweeping ambition is to replace large segments of engineering work with AI.

Bezos' Contrarian View on Labor and AI

While many tech leaders predict widespread job losses from AI, Bezos offers a different perspective. He told CNBC that AI-driven productivity gains will lead to what he terms 'labor scarcity,' where demand for human workers exceeds supply. 'Significant productivity in the economy is going to raise the standard of living,' Bezos said. 'People who today have two-earner households, they'll become one-earner households. Maybe some people who are working overtime will stop working overtime.'

Comparing Bezos' Philosophy with Amazon's Practices

Bezos' optimism about AI's impact on employment contrasts with Amazon's recent actions. Amazon, where Bezos serves as executive chairman and is the largest individual shareholder, employs over 1.5 million people globally. Under CEO Andy Jassy, the company has laid off tens of thousands of workers over the past year as it accelerates its own automation initiatives.

Operational Details and Capital Allocation

Prometheus currently has 150 employees across offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich. The company has kept details of its existing technology under wraps. Bezos indicated that a significant portion of the new capital will be directed toward meeting the company's substantial computing requirements.

Physical AI: A Surging Investment Trend

At a $41 billion valuation, Prometheus stands as one of the most richly valued AI startups ever funded. It is part of a broader trend of venture capitalists increasingly investing in physical AI—a sector that investors and founders argue offers stronger defensibility than pure software, as the physical world creates barriers that code alone cannot replicate.
