We had a really lovely week during the Easter holidays at the Gwel an mor resort. We were a little concerned about this holiday after reading the Trip advisor reviews over the 6 months leading up to our stay, but we didn’t need to worry as we didn’t experience any of the problems that others encountered. I suspect the resort needed a “freshen up” and I think this took place during the few weeks it was closed around late Jan/early Feb..
We arrived at the resort at 1pm, but our lodge wasn’t ready, so we kept ourselves busy until 4pm when we were able to get our key. Our 3 bed signature lodge was superb and positioned at the back of the Signature lodge section with views over the countryside towards the military base. This also meant that our deck and hot tub was very private as it backed onto the countryside rather than into the park – We have already booked a future holiday to stay at Gwel an Mor again and have requested to be in the same lodge, so fingers crossed we get our wish! The only downside to being at the rear of the Signature Lodge section is that you are a fairly long way from the resort facilities such as the swimming pool and soft play, but it is still walkable.
The lodge is very modern, and it takes a while to get familiar with all the different light switches and how to work the oven/microwave/TV etc, but we worked it all out without too much trouble. Hand wash and shower gel is provided, but I found the smell of these eco products a bit odd so didn’t use them, which was a minor disappointment, but not a problem as I brought my own from home.
The hot tub was a lovely treat at the end of each day and was a good size – you could easily fit 4 adults in if needed.
We dined in the Terrace restaurant twice for lunch and found the food to be very good, although portion sizes could potentially be a little larger for the price paid.
The swimming pool changing rooms need updating and the toilets need more regular cleaning as they smelled of urine both times we used the pool. The pool itself was clean however, and never too busy, but we only used it twice during the week as there are no slides or splash zones to keep the children occupied so it is better suited for adult swimming.
The sensory/accessible play area was nice and my toddlers enjoyed the slide, but I feel the resort really needs a larger separate outdoor play area as well. I was however very impressed to see a resort with an accessible play area as I’ve not seen this in any other resort before.
The soft play was also nice with a lovely café area. We used it 4 times during our stay and it was always quiet. My toddlers enjoyed their time in the soft play, and the climbing walls looked fun so we may try them next time we visit.
One of the reasons we chose Gwel an Mor in the first place was because they had a wildlife centre on site, and we thought that, as residents, we would be able to freely access this during our stay, but this was not the case sadly. The only animals you can view freely are the goats and reindeer, but the reptiles, meerkats, birds etc are all within a compound that can only be accessed via the shop and with a fee of £5 per person, which for us as a family of 5 meant £25 to gain access. You can walk around the whole compound in about 30 minutes, so we were a bit disappointed with this aspect of the park, both because we had to pay, and because it wasn’t as large as we had expected. I also felt that some of the bird enclosures were a little small, but I didn’t get the chance to speak with a keeper to see if they get the chance to fly freely occasionally, which would make it less of a concern. I think this area could be improved with some money and imagination injected into it.
We found that the walk to the beach and back was a little too difficult with our toddlers so wouldn't recommend this to others with young children. However, I would recommend it for anyone not travelling with young children as the walk through the wood is lovely, and once you enter the village, it's not too far to reach the beach and shops.
We found the location very convenient and there are some great places to visit nearby such as Paradise Park, Lands End and I would highly recommend “The Shire Inn” in Camborne for a Sunday Carvery!! Lovely Carvery and a huge array of delicious desserts available, but be warned, the dessert portion sizes are humungous so you may wish to share!
Overall, we really enjoyed our holiday at Gwel an Mor, and we look forward to staying in that beautiful lodge again next spring.
