• Firstly, before deciding, check for the ingredients whether the shampoo contains detergents, parabens and/or sodium laurel (or laureth) sulphates, which are harsh cleaning chemicals and could be potentially irritating to the dog’s skin and coat.
• If you know your dog has allergies or sensitive skin then you may be better off using a dog shampoo that contains soothing properties, such as oatmeal and aloe vera, with little or no fragrances and that definitely does not contain any detergents and chemicals.
• If you have not used a particular dog shampoo before, then buy the smallest size and test it out.  There will not be so much wasted if it is not suitable for your dog’s skin.

How to Use Dog Shampoo?

Shampooing your dog is very similar to washing your own hair:

• After wetting the dog’s coat thoroughly, squeeze the recommended amount of shampoo onto the dog’s coat and massage in thoroughly until the shampoo has lathered up.  See our page on Dog Bathing Techniques.
• Make sure you cover the dog’s coat all over.  Wash the face and head carefully, avoiding getting shampoo and water into the dog’s ears, eyes and up the nose.  It may be easier to use a cloth or flannel for washing the face and head.
• Once thoroughly rubbed all over, rinse off.
• Shampoo should ALWAYS be rinsed off thoroughly before drying.
• If you are going to CONDITION the dog’s coat after shampooing, check the instructions as to whether it is a leave-on conditioner or whether the conditioner needs to be rinsed off.  Some conditioners can be left on the coat to keep the dog smelling nice.

Waterless Dog Shampoos and Grooming Products
